Usually, when writing about a book I’ve read, I’ll say something like, “I just read this book” or “I just finished this book..”   However, with The UltraMind Solution: Fix Your Broken Brain by Healing Your Body First, I’m going to have to approach this in a whole new light.

I just discovered a book that I’ll be referring to and re-reading for the rest of my life. Mark Hyman, M.D. has written the definitive book for mental health, brain fitness, defeating depression, overcoming anxiety, and sharpening the mind. The UltraMind Solution: Fix Your Broken Brain by Healing Your Body First is a book I’m so excited about (and by) that this article is taking me longer to write than any article I’ve ever written!

There is so much remarkable, eye-opening information in this one book. Each chapter contains enough information, inspiration, and motivation to make its own book. It’s a wonder that a book which is so packed with great stuff reads as quickly as it does, but I zipped through it without ever wanting to put it down. And that was while taking great notes.

One of the things that has slowed my process of writing this review of the book is that I keep wanting to give away too much information. I’ll type out a portion, then I’ll think, “No. I people to read this within the context of the book, to see how this fact relates to the one before it and the one after it.” Then, I’ll hit backspace and start all over again. I’ve spent more time trying to review the book than I actually did reading it!

Another part of the problem is the pressure I’m putting on this review. See, the entire reason I began this web site and blog is an extremely strong desire to help people. The thought of anyone being sad, depressed, anxious, and/or stressed makes me as sad as they are. The thought of someone having problems with their mental fitness absolutely breaks my heart. I spend a great deal of time researching relaxation, moods, emotional well-being, and mental fitness. You should see my bookshelves!

So, imagine how I felt when I realized that there was a powerhouse of a book that could do so many people so much good. I only wish there was a way I could put this book in front of everyone’s eyes.

I will tell you about one particular section of The UltraMind Solution: Fix Your Broken Brain by Healing Your Body First. It’s in the 17th chapter, “The Ultramind Lifestyle: Exercise, Sleep, and Train Your Brain.” The author points out that exercise is better than Prozac (cheaper too, I’d imagine!). Here’s a passage:

While most of us accept the benefits of exercise on our bodies, perhaps its most powerful effect is on our brains.  It helps rewire our circuits and improve learning, memory, concentration, and focus.  And it is the best antidepressant and antianxiety therapy available.

If it were a pill it would be the biggest blockbuster drug of all time.  Yet all you need to take advantage of it is a pair of shoes and not even that if you live near a beach.

Mark Hyman then lists 12 benefits exercise has on our brains and bodies. At the end of the list, you’re left realizing that only a complete fool wouldn’t strive to get some form of exercise in daily. His recommendation is for the reader to walk vigorously for at least 30 minutes every day. I dare say, we should all be able to do that. The UltraMind Solution: Fix Your Broken Brain by Healing Your Body First shows the reader the importance of eating the right foods, exercising, getting enough rest, and adopting healthy a lifestyle. If we want our minds and bodies to give us their best, we have to give them ours.

  • I’ve just started reading this book. One thing that has bothered me is that I haven’t been able to find many peer-reviews of his book. I found two reviews by people who reportedly have MDs, one was quite positive. The other accuses Dr. Hyman of cherry-picking his research, and gives examples. I really wish I could find more reviews by experienced nutritionists and other medical professionals in related fields.

  • Great point, Tony. Many people would say that the medical field would be afraid to promote anything that would take away potential patients! I’m not quite that skeptical, so I’ll just say that maybe a lot of doctors haven’t read the book yet.

    I’ll look around and see what other reviews I can find. I know of a particular doctor (with a website and newsletter) who has read the book and I’m certain he has a review somewhere – I’ll see if I can find it and link to it in an upcoming post!

    The book is absolutely sensational – front to back.

  • I just finished the book. I have been changing my diet towards his suggestions as well as adding coconut oil into the mix from my research elsewhere, and the combination has already made a noticeable difference in just a couple weeks. I’m excited to fully try his recommendations and see what difference that makes. Still, I really wish I had more background on a lot of the claims. When I talk to friends about this stuff, I am challenged on what kind of research has led to some of these conclusions, and left without much to defend the ideas with.
